Mercury Consortium

Mercury Logo-WHITE

More than three dozen companies from across the global energy value chain have launched the public-private Mercury Consortium. Conceived by Kraken and EPRI, this non-profit consortium aims to establish guidelines and best practices to accelerate the adoption and impact of clean energy technologies to make grids more resilient and efficient to operate.

Shaping the Future of Consumer Device Interoperability

Mercury is a collaborative, non-profit initiative bringing together manufacturers, utilities, regulators, and tech providers. Our mission is to develop and promote guidelines for consumer devices—such as EVs, heat pumps, residential batteries, and smart thermostats—to integrate into energy systems and participate in demand-response programs and markets.

Objectives

  • Establish technical guidelines for interoperability and functionality to support grids.
  • Develop a certification/compliance body to certify compatible devices.
  • Foster collaboration to drive broad industry adoption.
  • Promote consumer participation in demand flexibility.
  • Maximize the benefits of smart-grid investments.

Key Benefits

  • Consumer Centric: Consumers are the most important stakeholder in the energy transition, Mercury removes one of the elements causing friction that slowed consumer engagement.
  • Cost Savings: Higher demand-side participation reduces the need for costly grid expansion and reliance on costlier methods of balancing grids.
  • Grid Resilience: Consumer flexibility strengthens resilience against extreme weather events and ensures grid reliability.

Consortium Member Categories

Mercury Consortium Launched to Boost Adoption of Clean Energy Tech

More than two dozen companies from across the global energy value chain have today launched the public-private Mercury Consortium. Conceived by Kraken, drawing inspiration from Ericsson’s pivotal role in the development of the Bluetooth connectivity standards, the consortium will be managed by EPRI, an independent, non-profit R&D organization dedicated to advancing clean, affordable, and reliable energy.
